Amazing Obscura Day at the Vanderbilt Mansion #obscuraday

March 20, 2010 is Obscura Day. Mitch and I went to the Vanderbilt Museum, Long Island.

"A tour of eccentric playboy William K. Vanderbilt II's astounding natural history collection. An avid sailor and explorer, Vanderbilt traveled the globe collecting artifacts and specimens for his own private natural history museum. We'll be getting a guided tour through the "Hall of Fishes," one of the largest private collections of marine specimens in the world, containing a mounted whale shark, the largest known piece of fish taxidermy."

Three top-class British meals

Corpulent after a recent trip to Blighty, I would like to present a smattering of the fattening.

First up, a magnificent roast beef dinner, with roast potatoes, peas, carrots and cabbage, smothered in gravy. This splendid repast was purchased at The Five Pointed Star in West Malling, Kent.

One step closer to my coronary, this classic English breakfast was enjoyed at the Pagoda Cafe by the Kew Gardens Underground station. Despite appearances, it wasn't greasy at all.

A truly excellent lamb Shepherds Pie, made by the fair Welsh hands of my friend, Sam. You could include the vegetables in the pie, but it makes it a very different consistency. It was tremendous.
