March 20, 2010 is Obscura Day. Mitch and I went to the Vanderbilt Museum, Long Island.
"A tour of eccentric playboy William K. Vanderbilt II's astounding natural history collection. An avid sailor and explorer, Vanderbilt traveled the globe collecting artifacts and specimens for his own private natural history museum. We'll be getting a guided tour through the "Hall of Fishes," one of the largest private collections of marine specimens in the world, containing a mounted whale shark, the largest known piece of fish taxidermy."
ABOUT OBSCURA DAY
Obscura Day is an international celebration of curious places happening around the world on March 20, 2010. It is sponsored by Atlas Obscura, a guide to the world's wonders, curiosities, and esoterica.
This is my favorite picture of the day. It's through the keyhole of the door of the hall of fishes.

The door itself.
Some weird animal doing something unnatural to a man in a hat. How New York.
